The conference was held from 1 – 3 September 2010 at the Life Sciences Building, University of the Western Cape, South Africa. The conference was hosted by the Interdisciplinary Centre of Excellence for Sports Science and Development (ICESSD) of the University of the Western Cape (UWC), in collaboration with the Department for Sport, Recreation, Exercise Science and Sport Administration (UWC), Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sports, United Nations Office on Sport for Development and Peace, International Council of Sport Science and Physical Education (ICSSPE), Jacobs Foundation, EFSA Institute, United Nations Association South Africa, Free University Berlin, VLIR-DBBS and Western Cape Provincial Sport Council.
DAY 1: Young Researchers Day
Innovative research about various topics in the field of Sport for Development, including the Millennium Development Goals, was presented mainly by BA/Hons/MA-students, PhD-students and Postdocs.
DAY 2 and 3: International Conference
The impact of the World Cup was analysed from various perspectives including, Health, Media, Tourism and Social and Economic Development. It was examined from regional, national and international viewpoints. Lessons learnt as well as initiatives beyond 2010 were discussed, looking towards next Mega-events, like the 2014 Soccer World Cup and the Olympic Games 2016 in Brazil. Therefore the conference hosted various national and international guest speakers.
